Guidelines and Procedures for Library Materials Purchases
The following guidelines are for faculty.
Book Order Requests
- Please check the LINUS catalog to determine whether or not the item is already available in the library's collection to avoid duplicate requests.
- Faculty, please use our online request form.
- If it is necessary to have a title in hand within six weeks of the request date, you may designate rush processing on the request form. Unless marked as rush, books are ordered by subject liaisons according to collection priorities and the availability of funds. A "rush" item is ordered and processed immediately and the library notifies the requestor by e-mail when rushed items become available for check-out.
- Avoid requesting pre-publication titles, such as those found in publisher’s catalogs. The library’s approval plan will ensure that most desirable publications are received as close to publication as possible. However, if you notice that an important title that was published months ago has not been acquired, please submit a request through the online request form.
- It is the library's policy to purchase the hardcover edition of books whenever possible. It is general Library policy to not purchase textbooks, instructor's manuals, pamphlets less than 50 pages, and ephemera.
Book Approval Plan Notifications
YBP Library Services sends approval plan book notifications to librarian subject liaisons. The liaisons may send them to their faculty library representatives, who may then send them to the faculty in the department. If in reviewing the titles, you are not interested in a book, ignore it. However, if you wish the library to order the book, you may submit the recommendation. Please consult your department’s faculty library representative if you have questions.
