CHARLES LUCKMAN PAPERS, 1908-2000 (CSLA-34)
SERIES 14: Citizens Food Committee
Series Size: 2 archival document boxes, 1 oversize box, 1 scrapbook
At the request of President Harry S. Truman in 1947, Charles Luckman served as chair of the twenty-six member “Citizens’ Food Committee,? whose charge was to devise strategies to save American grain for shipment to a war-desolated Europe short on foodstuffs. Ineffectual in its effort to develop voluntary rationing in the United States, the committee only lasted two months, but it was the forerunner of Truman’s great foreign policy achievement, the Marshall Plan. This series contains some Charles Luckman correspondence concerning his work as chair; other materials include committee budgets, the final report of the committee, photographs, and newspaper articles. All materials date from 1947.
