Dockweiler Family Collection

THE THOMAS AND DOROTHY LEAVEY CENTER FOR THE STUDY OF LOS ANGELES RESEARCH COLLECTION

DOCKWEILER FAMILY COLLECTION

The Dockweiler Family Collection consists of materials from a Roman Catholic family long distinguished in Los Angeles civic, legal, and social life. Anchoring the holdings are the materials concerning the patriarch of the family, Isidore Bernard Dockweiler (1867-1947), prominent Los Angeles lawyer and civic leader, and personage of the California Democratic Party. There is also material on his mother and father, Henry and Margaretha; and Isidore's brother, John Henry.  In addition, the eleven children of Isidore Bernard Dockweiler and his wife Gertrude are well represented in the collection:  Thomas, Henry Isidore, George, John, Mary, Ruth, Rosario, Robert, Louis, and Frederick.

Manuscripts, personal and family papers, publications, photographs, scrapbooks, clippings, and ephemera constitute this collection's holdings, providing valuable witness to the social and political history of Los Angeles, and in their broader reach, to California history.

The Dockweiler Collection consists of two separate but related holdings: CSLA-12 and CSLA-13. The provenance of CSLA-12 is known (it came from Frederick C. Dockweiler). That of CSLA-13 is not, resulting in the assigning of a different collection number to this group of materials. The majority of the Dockweiler holdings are found in CSLA-12.
