Series Descriptions

A brief description of each series is listed below. Descriptions include links to each series' box and folder list, which is an index to a series' holdings and arrangement in folders and boxes.

 

I. BOARD OF DIRECTORS. 1992-1997. Files kept by and about RLA's Board of Directors.

A. Administrative Files.
 Includes Board recommendations, RLA bylaws, Mission statement, handbook, etc. (3 boxes)
B. Biographies--1992-1994. Of the Board of directors, arranged alphabetically. Some photographs. (2 boxes)
C. Biographies--1994-1997. Of the Board of directors, arranged alphabetically. Some photographs. (6 boxes) (1994 began the second "phase" of RLA.)
D. Board Meetings. July 28, 1992-- November 21, 1996. (5 boxes)
E. "The Board Report". July 5, 1993-- June 18, 1996. (1 box)
F. Subject Files. Includes Business Expansion Loan Fund, RLA Facts and Figures, Telacu, etc. (2 boxes)
G. Barry Sanders Subject Files. Legal Aid Foundation, Los Angeles Unified School District, San Diego National Sports Training Foundation, Town Hall Meetings, Warner Brothers, etc. Also correspondence related to Sanders' activities at Latham-Watkins [law firm]. (Sanders was one of RLA's original four co-chairs). (4 boxes)


II. PRESIDENT'S OFFICE. 1992-1997. Includes Linda Griego's (CEO 1994-1997) files.

A. Correspondence. 1994-1996
. Linda Griego's correspondence with individuals and organizations, separated into two groups:

1.Outgoing. Filed alphabetically. Photocopies of letters and many original rough drafts. (3 boxes)
2.Incoming. Filed alphabetically. Originals, some photocopies and fax documents. (2 boxes)

B. Invitations. 1994-1997. Linda Griego's invitations to speaking engagements and special events, organized by month and year and subdivided into "accepted" and "rejected." (26 boxes)
C. Subject Files. Linda Griego's subject files organized alphabetically and containing such items as the RLA Handbook and correspondence related to Prince Charles' visit in 1994. (4 boxes)


III. COMMUNICATIONS. 1992-1997.
 Relates to RLA in general, as well as Linda Griego and other spokespersons specifically. Divided into ten subseries.

A. Biographies and Itineraries
. Contains some itineraries of Linda Griego and Linda Wong; biographies of various RLA staff as well as Kathleen Brown and Debbie Esparza. (1 box)
B. Press Calls. Correspondence, memos, and notes related to radio, television, and press--(requests for interviews) filed alphabetically by name of periodical or station. (2 boxes)
C. "Inside RLA". Company newsletter from 11/1992-12/1993, including a few Korean and Spanish editions. (1 box)
D. Issues. General information on media training, media relations, RLA communication strategies, correspondence. Radio interview summaries between various radio stations and RLA spokespersons. (6 boxes)
E. Media and Press Releases (News Advisory). 1992-1994. Items highlighting RLA and its projects; individual files in addition to 2 bound volumes. The individual files are arranged alphabetically by business or project name; the bound volumes are arranged in reverse chronological order. (6 boxes)
F. Newspaper Articles. 1992-1997. One box of newspaper articles glued onto notebook pages; one box of photocopied news articles. Half of the latter are articles regarding real estate. The other articles pertain to RLA, riot-related issues, mayoral candidates, Jimmy Carter's Atlanta Project and his interest in RLA, etc. (2 boxes)
G. "RLA News Digest". An almost daily compilation of photocopied newspaper articles of interest to RLA's mission between May and December of 1993. Originated by media project manager Tim Sosnowski in May 1993; in August of that year Martin Madrigal assumed responsibility for the project and changed its name to "RLA Journal." Arranged chronologically. (1 box)
H. Speeches. 1994-1996. Copies of Linda Griego's remarks to various conferences and organizations, filed by date. Some of her speaking engagements were to: Mexican-American Opportunity Foundation, Angeles Girl Scout Council, Boy Scouts of America, United Way, Kiwanis Club, many schools and colleges. (Approximately 25 speeches are those of other RLA leaders, notably Linda Wong and Linda Yeung.) Records appear to be complete. (7 boxes)


IV. OPERATIONS AND FINANCE. 1992-1997.

A. Operations.
 Consists of records concerning RLA's structure and operation, executive committee agendas, resumes of prospective RLA employees, project and task force descriptions, progress reports, records of the RLA Recognition Program, and lists of RLA donations. (4 boxes)

1.Personnel-Resumes, biographical information on employees, interns, volunteers, and prospective employees. (2 boxes)
2. Task Forces-Meeting minutes, projects, and members of RLA's task forces. (2 boxes)

B. Finance. 1992-1996. General journal entries and general ledger reports from 1992; budget and expenses information for 1992-1993; information on banks and financial institutions; files on the RLA Community Lending Corporation. Not many records for 1994-1996. (5 boxes)


V. ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT.
 During RLA's early years (1992-93) this department was called "Business and Economic Development." One of the many task forces was the business development task force which comprises one of the subseries in this series.

A. Business Development
 . Projects and information on business development, business expansion networks, business incubator networks, enterprise zones, urban incubators, industrial development, international trade, the RLA Lending Corporation, etc. (20 boxes)

1. Minority-Owned Businesses-Information on minority-owned businesses, particularly in Los Angeles County. (2 boxes)

B. General Motors Van Distribution Program. 1992-1994. As part of the General Motors/Hughes Aircraft overall program to help the inner city, the two corporations loaned 100 vans to community organizations for a one-year period. Records regarding the recipients in this program are included as well as the many agencies which requested vans. (3 boxes)

C. Manufacturing Networks. One of RLA's primary focus areas when it restructured itself in 1994 was the formation of manufacturing networks. These networks were comprised of small manufacturing companies located in target neighborhoods; the idea was that the companies would expand and thereby increase jobs in neglected communities. There is a good deal of information on these networks as well as the individual industries that comprised them: apparel and textile, biomedical, electronics, entertainment, food processing, furniture, metalworking, plastics, and toys. D. Organizations and Projects. 1992-1996. Includes records and brochures of organizations, business data including 1994 SIC codes, information on corporate commitments, project proposals, and small businesses. Some organizations and projects include the Atlanta Project, Ben & Jerry's, East L.A. Student Park, Habitat for Humanity, L.A. Ecovillage, Toyota, Tree People, Vons, Walt Disney Company. (32 boxes)

1. Corporate Commitments-Corporations include Arco, Bank of America, Coca-Cola, McDonald's, Ralph's, Southern California Edison, Warner Brothers. (3 boxes)

E. Vacant Lots Project. 1994. Correspondence, memoranda, and original responses to the survey conducted in 1994 of over 1100 residents regarding retail possibilities of vacant properties. The subsequent published market research report is also included.

VI. LABOR FORCE DEVELOPMENT. 1994-1996.
 RLA began working with a consortium of community colleges, private employers, and public agencies to develop vocational and job training curricula that would meet the needs of manufacturing firms in the neglected areas. The collection that the Center received contained only a small amount of records pertaining to this aspect of RLA: files on education, job training, community college projects, RLA's Volunteer Network, "Los Angeles Job Journal", and lists of contractors. A. Avery-Dennison Project
-RLA's project with Avery-Dennison to develop a minority employee-owned label printing business in a neglected area. (2 boxes)
B. Education-Includes information on the L.A. Urban Systemic Initiative, mathematics and science projects, Turner's Technical Institute. (2 boxes)
C. Job Training-Job training programs, First Break program, Job Training Partnership Act, L.A. Job Journal, Youth Fair Chance, etc. (4 boxes)


VII. COMMUNITY RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT
. Includes records of the early Health/Human Services/Youth task force as well as the Community Resources Development group which absorbed the earlier task force. Projects include Latino issues, childcare, school beautification, immigration and naturalization, women's coalitions, community beautification projects, etc. (4 boxes)

VIII. TRANSITION. 1996-1997
. Includes records relating to RLA's dissolution and transition to new organization, L.A. Prosper Partners: Four copies of "L.A. Business Journal"(4/28/97), conference program ("Los Angeles Rebuilding for the Next Five Years"--4/23/97), publication--"Rebuilding L.A.'s Urban Communities: A Final Report from RLA", Community Development Technologies Center information, LACCD-RLA-CDT Center Transition Plan, RLA inventories (software, furniture, etc.), RFP materials, possible archives to house RLA records. (2 boxes)

A. Requests for Proposals-Information for and about organizations interested in continuing RLA's programs after its dissolution, Selection Committee interviews, and reviews. (1 box)

IX. RESEARCH AND GENERAL REFERENCE
. Contains materials used for in-house research and reference purposes.

A. Articles, Studies, and Reports.
 Includes chiefly articles pertaining to Los Angeles urban issues, and economics. Some items of interest are an atlas of South Central L.A., a report from the AD HOC Committee on Recovery and Revitalization, and many articles specifically on L.A. firms. Other files include Governor's Office of Planning and Research, North American Free Trade Agreement, Mega-Cities Project, L.A. Damage Reports, etc. (26 boxes)
B. Directories and Resource Guides. Some examples are the Black Business Association Business Resource Guide, the Environmental Services Guide for the Community, the Parker Directory of California Attorneys, and the 1996 Directory of Urban Manufacturers in L.A. County. (6 boxes)


X. AUDIOVISUAL MATERIALS.

A. Audicocassette Tapes.
 14 audiotapes spotlighting RLA and its mission. Four of them are recordings of the KCRW radio show "Which Way L.A.?" including an interview with Linda Griego. (1 box)
B. Movie Reels. Two copies of a film comprised of 8 RLA spots tied. (7/1/93)
C. Photographs. 1992-1996. Black-and-white enlargements of RLA personalities as well as its programs such as the General Motors Van Distribution Program, East L.A. City College Student Park, Vacant Lots project, Watts/Willowbrook Boys and Girls Club (with Mayor Richard Riordan). There are also many color photographs of various Board of Directors meetings, pictures of former president Jimmy Carter, and many photos of RLA parties and other staff events.
D. Videocassette Tapes. 1992-1995. Over 150 videotapes of RLA promotional spots, news footage, press conferences, interviews. Included are clips from "Larry King Live" and "Good Morning America." Various RLA spokespersons are featured such as Peter Ueberroth, Barry Sanders, and Linda Griego. There are also a few outside films such as one on Thurgood Marshall and another on the California Hispanic High School Drop Out Project. A few of the videos are Beta; most are 1/2-inch VHS, some are 3/4-inch. (9 boxes)


XI. MAPS
. Includes several large street maps of L.A.'s targeted areas as well as two aerial blueprints of L.A. In addition, there are several plastic overlays depicting vacant lots, neglected areas, and other data. There are 5 Shell Oil maps showing proposed food mart and training center floor plans. Also a planting plan for East Los Angeles College Students Park. (1 box, 2 ov boxes, 3 ov folders in map case)

XII. EPHEMERA. 1996.
 Christmas cards to RLA. Several have photos inserted or printed as part of the card; i.e. Yvonne Burke, Gray Davis, Gil Garcetti, Lucille Roybal-Allard, Al Gore and family. Also in this series are four RLA pins, a sheet of RLA stationery, and a large cloth banner of the RLA logo. (2 boxes, 1 ov box.)

XIII. PUBLISHED MATERIALS.
 Several books related to Los Angeles and urban issues. Titles include: Adolescence and Poverty--Challenge for the 1990's, Immigration and Immigrants: Setting the Record Straight, Inside the L.A. Riots, Los Angeles: Realm of Possibility, etc. (2 boxes)

XIV. Education, Training and Jobs Task Force.
