Lectures and Orientations
LMU faculty are encouraged to bring their classes to the Department of Archives & Special Collections for an instruction session. A staff member will provide general introductory information, such as an overview of the collections and basic researcher rules, suggestions for finding and working with primary resources, as well as any other requested information about the Department and its holdings. In addition, we will create a display with primary source materials tailored to the subject of the class, so that students can experience our collections first-hand.
Recent class orientation sessions and exhibits have included:
-
Rare children's books (English 346, Children's Literature)
-
Rare Spanish-language books (Spanish 321, Stylistics & Composition)
-
First editions of English and American classics (English 110, College Writing)
-
Leaves from medieval manuscripts, facsimiles (The Medieval Bible, a Theological Studies seminar)
Advance arrangements and consultations are required for class visits and major classroom research assignments. Community groups and organizations are also invited to visit. We encourage you to contact us early in the semester or before the start of the semester, as our calendar fills up quickly. Please contact a member of the staff for appointments; or call the department at 310-338-5710; or email the department: Special.Collections@lmu.edu.
