This collection consists of photographs (cartes-de-visite), letters and government bonds related to the themes and conduct of the American Civil War (1861-1865). These materials were acquired to serve as a foundation for a collection specifically dedicated to Civil War history. Accruals can be expected in the future, which will be given different accession numbers.
List of holdings
Folder 1: Confederate spy letter from James Burton to Confederate General Daniel Ruggles, at Columbus, Mississippi. Burton’s report to Ruggles concerns the cavalry raid of Union Colonel Benjamin Grierson. Also auctioneer’s blurb re the history of the raid and the letter’s significance. Date: April 19, (1863).
Folder 2: Anti-abolitionist and anti-war letter of John Necker, prominent Illinois businessman, to Hill Logan re abolitionist, African-Americans, and Abraham Lincoln’s presidency and position on slavery. 2 copies for research use. Date: December 24, 1866.
Folder 3 (oversize): Confederate $1000 bond. Date: February 20, 1865.
Folder 4. Sleeves 1-6: 6 cartes-de-visite, with cancelled revenue stamps and names of photographers on back. From the Civil War era. Undated.
