Acquisitions/Serials Department
The Acquisitions & Serials Department is located on Level 2 of the William H. Hannon Library, within the staff offices in the northeast corner.
This technical processing unit acquires materials, except media, for the library's collections, including print books and journals, e-books, e-journals, and online databases. Media materials are acquired by the Media & Reserve Services Department.
Acquisitions & Serials staff do not select the materials that are acquired. Selecting materials is the responsibility of the Collection Development Department, Faculty Library Representatives (FLRs), and librarian subject liaisons. In addition to placing firm orders for items selected by librarians and faculty, the Department receives books through two vendor approval plans. Approval plans are carefully developed profiles of topics, corresponding to the disciplines taught at LMU, from which newly published books from many well-respected publishers and most academic presses are continually sent to the library.
Faculty may submit book requests to the library through the online Request a Book Form, or by sending the equivalent information (including author, title, publisher, date of publication, and ISBN number) through email or campus mail. For media requests, use the online Media Request Form.
Because journal subscriptions require a long-term annual commitment of funds, faculty requests for new journal subscriptions must be accompanied by a list of specific classes or research the resource will support and the endorsement of the academic department's chair. Requests for new subscriptions may be submitted for library review at any time through the academic department's FLR or librarian liaison. Because the library schedules most subscriptions to begin in January, requests to be considered for the next calendar year should be submitted by September 1.
