RELATED COLLECTIONS: CSLA-33: Documents for the History of the Daniel Freeman Family and the Rancho Centinela; CSLA-11: Rancho La Ballona Map; and CSLA-21: Daniel Freeman Family Papers

CSLA-32 consists of materials that Mrs. David S. (Betty Forsyth) collected on the Machado family, one of the original families to settle Los Angeles in 1781, and on their Rancho La Ballona, which the Mexican government officially granted to the Machados and the Talamantes in 1839. Mike Engh, S.J., served as the intermediary through which the Research Collection acquired the materials. (The Machado materials were separated from those related to the Daniel Freeman family and their Rancho Centinela that the Forsyth family gave to Father Engh. They form a separate collection: CSLA-33.)

Genealogical information on the family comes from a report on the family from the San Diego Genealogical Society.  Valuable is the photostatic copy of the U. S. government’s decision on Machado ownership of the rancho, along with a plat map. There are also records of the suit that John Young brought against Ignacio Machado over the ownership of the rancho in the 1860s  Most of these materials are copies; thus, in the box and folder list, the date given is that for the original source from which the copies were made.
