Department of Archives and Special Collections Exhibits:

Over the course of the 2009-2010 academic year, the Department of Archives and Special Collections will have on display a series of exhibits highlighting the History of the Book.  Throughout the centuries, the tools and media for writing have undergone drastic changes, from clay tablets to parchment scrolls and paper codices, from manuscript to print, and finally from hand letterpress to mechanized mass production.  The opening exhibit, entitled "Clay, Parchment, Paper: Book Production from the Ancient World to the Present Day," follows the evolution of the physical processes of book-making from the ancient world, through the Medieval and Renaissance periods, continuing through the industrial revolution and up to the present.  Items on display include treasures from the library's own rare book collection, as well as ancient artifacts on loan from the LMU Archaeology Center and artists' books created by LMU students.

This exhibit is free to the public, and is located in the Archives & Special Collections gallery on the third floor of the William H. Hannon Library. Gallery hours are 8am-5pm, Monday through Friday.  "Clay, Parchment, Paper: Book Production from the Ancient World to the Present Day" will remain on display through the Fall semester.
