Chavez Ravine: An Unfinished Story

Archival Collection

Chavez Ravine: An Unfinished Story is a community-curated collection that features oral histories and photographs documenting the neighborhood lives of those who lived where Dodger Stadium now sits. Our collection documents and preserves the histories of Palo Verde, La Loma and Bishop, now commonly referred to as Chavez Ravine, from the 1910s to the early 2000s. The collection is the outcome of larger community-academic partnership that seeks to address important gaps in our understanding of the three neighborhoods by centering the voices and the stories of the community members and their descendants. Our collection:

  • Is a living archive. We are actively processing photographs and oral histories as well as updating information on existing items as community members bring forth new information.
  • Engages multiple generations of residents. Our donors range from residents who lived in one (or more) of the three communities to their great grandchildren.
  • Preserves community ownership. Donors are given the option to retain the copyright of their photos.
  • Stands on the shoulders of Los Desterrados and their families who remain the original historians and archivists of this important history.

This collection also includes contributions from storytellers who have worked with community members to capture their stories.
