About the Library

A Message from Kristine Brancolini,
Dean of the Library

Welcome to the William H. Hannon Library! We have only been open for three years – since summer 2009 – and the popularity of our building, collections, and services continues to grow. The library supports the teaching, learning, and research needs of the students, faculty, and staff of Loyola Marymount University. Our new facility has helped us realize our vision for the library as a center of intellectual, cultural, and social life on campus.  During the academic year, the library is open 24 hours a day, 5 days a week. We are open until midnight on Friday and Saturday.

Loyola Marymount University offers a dynamic academic environment and the William H. Hannon Library contributes to each student’s education, including developing his or her skills as a life-long learner. You will find the library to be an important destination for you – both physically and virtually. The William H. Hannon Library is located on the bluff, between the Leavey Residence Halls and the Jesuit Community. Please come inside and familiarize yourself with our outstanding services, collections, and spaces.

The building provides wired and wireless network connections and plenty of electrical outlets. We also offer day lockers on Level 1, down the hall from the Circulation Desk.

All three floors provide a variety of seating options and work spaces, including 33 small group study rooms that may be reserved in advance online. Click here to see details about the rooms and our policies for using them. For example, you may reserve a group study room online for four hours per person, which means that a study group with three people could reserve one for 12 hours! Each group study room has a white board wallpaper called WallTalker,(tm) and a large flat screen panel on the wall where you can display a paper or a PowerPoint presentation from a laptop. If you would like to borrow a laptop - for in-library use only - please visit the Desk on Level 2.

The description below is just a sampling of the richness you will find. Please explore the building at your leisure, returning often to research, read, review, reflect, or just relax.

Level 1

  • Café and media lounge with three flat-panel screens
  • Digital signage to guide your use of the library
  • Circulation Desk
  • Two electronic classrooms for library instruction
  • Information Commons (IC)
The IC is a one-stop destination for assistance with information technology and reference questions (look for the Information Desk sign). It has collaborative computer workstations and three presentation rooms where you can practice and video record your performance. The Information Desk is staffed with librarians, information technologists, and advanced student assistants during the library’s full-service hours.

Level 2

  • Main stacks
  • The Rose Hills Reading Room, which has a fireplace and comfortable seating
  • Current periodicals
  • Media center with individual video viewing workstations
  • 19 group study rooms – four with video viewing capability and two with listening equipment to access our audio collection
  • Popular Reading Collection
The Popular Reading Collection is designed to answer the question, “Where would I find a good book to read?  It is comprised of approximately 650 books, drawn from the best of contemporary publishing, including literary fiction, biography, national affairs, humor, and more.

Level 3

  • Main stacks and Oversize books
  • Archives & Special Collections – where you may use our extensive collections of rare books and archives and enjoy special exhibits
  • Von der Ahe Family Suite – most of the library's programs and events take place in this beautiful space, with expansive views overlooking the Marina and the city
  • Faculty Commons and Innovation Center – designed to provide faculty with a place to work quietly and explore new technologies for teaching and learning.
  • 11 group study rooms – most with beautiful views of the city or the campus

Our library website provides a useful source of information about the library, its services and its collections. The website is also a gateway to a wealth of online information, including news about and events in the library. On the homepage, you will see “Library Services for…" where you can find links to specific information for students, faculty, staff, and alumni.  You will also find the Get Help link, where you will find ways to contact the library 24/7.

I invite you to contact me with your comments and suggestions regarding the library: brancoli@lmu.edu. We are here to serve your teaching, learning, and research needs.
