2021-2024. “Expanding Access to Research Training for Academic Librarians (IRDL Online).” Institute of Museum and Library Services, Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program Grant, continuing education. Grant number RE-250170-OLS-21. Marie R. Kennedy, Principal Investigator, Kristine R. Brancolini, Co-Investigator.
Summary: The Loyola Marymount University Library, in collaboration with the San José State University School of Information and the Statewide California Electronic Library Consortium, will expand the availability of the successful research training and mentoring program for novice librarian-researchers, the Institute for Research Design in Librarianship (IRDL). Transitioning the proven in-person training experience to a sustainable synchronous online format will provide access to a wider base of participants at a lower cost per participant. To further cultivate the growing community of practice of librarian-researchers, IRDL Online proposes to develop the IRDL Scholars' Speaker Series and IRDL Online Research Conference as part of the program. Scholars will have free access to IRDL Online and it will provide research training and mentorship to 90 librarians over three years.

Summary: Loyola Marymount University's William H. Hannon Library, in partnership with San José State University School of Information and the Statewide California Electronic Library Consortium, will extend and improve the Institute for Research Design in Librarianship (IRDL). Sixty novice academic and research librarian researchers will receive instruction in research methods and a full year of support to complete a project. Participants will develop their research skills through participation in a summer workshop featuring in-class exercises and hands-on writing sessions as well as research studies conducted at their home libraries. The project team will deliver instruction; create a workshop environment; foster an environment of collegiality and support in the research process; facilitate the dissemination of results; and focus on new evaluative components to create a cost-effective, sustainable model for academic and research librarians to become skilled researchers capable of mentoring and collaborating with one another in their investigative work.
